Lips are talking a lot. They maintain both verbal and nonverbal communication. Lips are probably second place people look at, after eyes. Lipstick draw even more attention to them, emphasizing all signals that are sent out. Muscles around lips allow us to shape them with great control. So we can easily manipulate our movings when needed.
Parted
Slightly opened lips usually indicate that person wants to talk, thus meaning a try to draw attention to the speaker and allow them to talk.
Slightly parted lips can also be a flirting signal. It has even stronger meaning when lips are licked while holding a gaze of the other person .
Pursed
Pursed lips in most cases mean anger (which can also be suppressed). A person keeps mouth shut preventing saying out what they feel like saying.
Lips that are pulled inwards usually mean tension. This sign can also mean disapproval or frustration.
Puckered
We pucker our lips when feeling uncertain. This is even more emphasized when touching lips with fingers.
Slightly puckered lips into kiss shape show a desire for kiss.
Flattened
Lips squeezed flat in horisontal position can indicate disapproval, a repressed desire to speak. This sign can also mean frustration.
Children often flatten their lips when refusing to eat.
Turned up
When corners of mouth are lifted up, this can mean toothless smile, which is usually false or might be a showing of disgust. A grimace of disgust is usually flatter and tenser.
Turned down
If corners of the mouth are turned down, that means displeasure or sadness.
For some people this is a natural state to be. They always look sad or displeased.
Retracted
Pulling back lips expose teeth. This can be in a wide smile or can be a snarl of aggression. A broad smile would make eyes to crease in outer corners. A snarl of aggression is recognised either by narrowed or staring eyes.
Moving
Sometimes people can move their lips while thinking. They literally silently sound the words, which occupy their mind. It can be almost invisible and is often completely subconscious movement.
Chewing makes lips to move up and down. Some people, when they are nervous can chew the insides of the mouth.
Rolling one lip over the other can mean disapproval or uncertainty. This can also be done to moister dry lips (the better way to moister your lips is obviously using lipstick).
Protruding
Lips, that are pressed together and pushed out usually mean doubt. Touching them at the same time indicate deep internal thinking.
Bottom lip covering top lip usually indicates uncertainty.
Top lip over bottom one may indicate that person feels guilty. This can involve biting the bottom lip. I, personaly, sometimes bite my bottom lip, while thinking.
When somebody is jutting out bottom lip, that usually expresses petulance at not getting their own way.
Twitching
Twitching is mostly subconscious movement, which betray inner thoughts. E.g a single twitch of one of the corners means disbelief or cynicism.
Twitching often betrays liars.
Biting
Biting the lip (usually the bottom one) can express anxiety. It's often down to habit and people would repeat this action in predictable situations.
Relaxed
When lips don't move in any directions usually this means that the person is relaxed.
Lisa asked me about chin body language. Tomorrow I'll be covering that topic.
